Our Story

In 1998 we started Ironwood Farm on 95 acres in northern Culpeper County. By 2000, we started breeding Norwegian Fjord Horses and quickly became the largest Fjord breeding farm in Virginia.  Interest has grown over the years in this horse breed and we have expanded into clinics and education events about the breed.  The missing piece was offering accomodation on the farm for visitors interested in the horses or the rural experience.  In 2025 we built a new home on an additional 38 acres we had acquired and created the Ironwood Inn.

The B&B is on the second floor and includes 4 bedrooms and 3 baths.    One set of bedrooms shares a bath and was created for families in mind.  All of our rooms are named after some of our original mares who founded our breeding program.  ​The rooms are large and welcoming. We do offer optional educational programs to guests who want to know more about the breed and farming.

Our farm is quiet, private and comfortable.  It has a large private area and deck for guests, as well as access to the public areas of the first floor. Our property has trails for walking, a stocked pond for fishing and ample bird activity for watching.   We are located in an area of Virginia that is close to colonial and Civil War sites, as well as the natural beauty of the Blue Ridge mountains.  It's a great area for a weekend escape.  If you are a foxhunter, we are within an hour of 10 - 12 territories and can accommodate your horses and trailer for visits during Hunt Week.
